What Is...

9.  What is the Internet?

The Internet is a means of communicating from one computer to another. The Internet supports the World Wide Web, email, and other services. No one owns the Internet; it is a cooperative venture by many educational institutions, businesses, and individuals.

10.  What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web is a collection of "pages" that can be displayed by a program called a "browser" that runs on your computer. Pages may contain text, drawings, photographs, sounds, music, animations, and other content.

Some popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. These products are free and can be downloaded or upgraded.

11.  What is a Web site?

Web pages are organized into Web sites. Each Web site represents one (or part of one) business, organization, or individual.

Web sites may offer products, services, information, or entertainment.

12.  What is a Domain Name?

A Domain Name is the "address" of a Web site. Examples of domain names are www.nbc.com, www.abc.com, and www.cbs.com (these are the names of the Web sites for the three major TV networks).

Domain Names are maintained by special Internet organizations, registration services, who charge a fee (typically $20-$30/year) for registering them.

Domain Name registration services are not Internet Service Providers or Web site hosting services.

13.  What is an Internet Service Provider?

An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company or institution that connects computers with the Internet.

This connection may be by "dialup", which means connection by telephone, or may be "broadband", which refers to higher speed connections such as ISDN (telephone company), Cable (cable TV), and others such as T1 (telephone company).

ISPs may charge from $6 to $35 or more per month for their services, depending principally on their slice of the market (which is mostly determined by their advertising budget).

14.  What is a Web Hosting Service?

A Web hosting service is different from an Internet Service Provider (ISP), in spite of the similarity in their names.

Hosting services make Web sites available. They provide "Web servers", which are computers dedicated to making Web pages available over the Internet. A hosting service provides disk space for the data (computer files) making up a Web site, as well as special software to deliver the data to your Web browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and Communicator, Opera, or others).

Web hosting services may charge from $10 to $100 or more, depending on the desired level of service and support.
